WHAT DO OWNERS WANT TO KNOW?

Are Cavachons good family dogs?

Excellent

9 out of 10

The Cavachon is an excellent family dog due to its affectionate, gentle, and playful temperament. Their hypoallergenic, low-shedding coats make them ideal for families with allergy sufferers, while their eagerness to please ensures they are easy to train.

Excellent

9 out of 10

Cavachons are generally excellent with children, known for being gentle, patient, and playful companions. Their affectionate nature and moderate energy levels make them well-suited for families. However, due to their small and somewhat fragile stature, supervision is recommended with younger children to ensure gentle handling and prevent accidental injury. Socializing them early ensures they remain confident and friendly around kids of all ages.

Exceptional

9 out of 10

Cavachons are highly recommended for first-time owners due to their affectionate, gentle, and eager-to-please nature. Their intelligence and adaptable temperament make them relatively easy to train and integrate into various lifestyles. As a designer hybrid bred specifically for companionship, they provide a rewarding and manageable experience for those new to dog ownership.

Good

6 out of 10

Cavachons are well-suited for apartment living thanks to their small size, adaptable nature, and generally quiet disposition. They thrive in compact spaces as long as they receive moderate daily exercise and consistent human interaction, making them ideal companions for city dwellers who are frequently home.

Very Low

8 out of 10

A yard is not strictly required for a Cavachon, as they are highly adaptable to apartment living and have moderate exercise needs. While they enjoy having a secure space to play, daily walks and indoor interactive games are sufficient to keep this small, gentle hybrid happy and healthy.

Not Recommended

1 out of 10

Cavachons are highly social dogs that thrive on human companionship and are prone to separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods. While they can manage short intervals of solitude, they do best in households where someone is present for most of the day. To prevent destructive behaviors or excessive barking, owners should provide mental stimulation and consider arrangements like doggy daycare or a second pet for company.

Excellent

9 out of 10

Cavachons are exceptionally cat-friendly due to their social, gentle nature and low prey drive. They typically form harmonious bonds with feline housemates, especially when introduced slowly and socialized from a young age.

Alert

4 out of 10

Cavachons are not naturally aggressive; they are renowned for their friendly, gentle, and affectionate temperament. While they may bark to alert owners of strangers, they typically view everyone as a friend and lack the territorial instincts of other breeds. Aggression is rare and usually only develops from a lack of early socialization or fear, making consistent positive reinforcement training essential to maintaining their patient and sweet-natured character.

Energetic

7 out of 10

Cavachons have moderate energy levels, described as being spirited and fun-loving without being overly demanding. They enjoy a mix of daily walks and interactive indoor play, such as fetch or tug-of-war, but are also famous for their love of cuddling on a lap. While they aren't total couch potatoes, they are highly adaptable and can easily adjust their activity to match a quieter or more active family lifestyle.

~45 min a day

6 out of 10

Cavachons require moderate daily exercise to stay healthy and happy, typically needing between 30 and 60 minutes of activity. This can be achieved through two short walks or a mix of strolls and interactive indoor play. While they are energetic and playful, they lack high endurance, so splitting exercise into smaller sessions is recommended to avoid overexertion. Mental stimulation through training and puzzle toys is also beneficial for this intelligent hybrid.

Fair

4 out of 10

Cavachons are prone to overheating as both parent breeds, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bichon Frise, have low heat tolerance. Owners should avoid exercise during the hottest parts of the day, keep hair trimmed shorter in summer, and provide constant access to fresh water and shade. Monitoring for heavy panting is essential, as these small dogs can struggle significantly once temperatures exceed 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Moderate Risk

6 out of 10

Cavachons are rarely subject to breed bans, as they are a small, gentle designer hybrid specifically bred for companionship. Their friendly nature and compact size make them highly acceptable for most apartment complexes and rental properties. However, as with all pets, it is important to check individual landlord policies regarding weight limits or general pet requirements.

"Cavachons are delightful companions, but they are predisposed to several hereditary conditions from their parent breeds. As a veterinarian, I prioritize monitoring for heart conditions, particularly Mitral Valve Disease (MVD), which is highly prevalent in the Cavalier line and can lead to heart failure. They are also prone to Syringomyelia, a serious neurological disorder, as well as patellar luxation, cataracts, and chronic ear infections due to their floppy ear structure. Because they can inherit skin allergies (atopy) and dental issues, I recommend regular professional grooming, proactive dental care, and choosing breeders who provide clear health screenings for both parent dogs to ensure a healthy life."
