While calm indoors, they require 45–60 minutes of daily exercise to maintain their health. WHAT DO OWNERS WANT TO KNOW?

Are Great Danoodles good family dogs?

Excellent

4 out of 10

The Great Danoodle is an excellent family companion known for its affectionate, intelligent, and eager-to-please nature. These "gentle giants" generally get along well with children and other pets, though they thrive best in environments where they can receive plenty of human interaction.

Excellent

4 out of 10

Great Danoodles are excellent for kids, known for being patient, gentle, and affectionate companions. Their calm temperament and high tolerance make them well-suited for family life, although their large size requires supervised play with smaller children to prevent accidental knocks. They are protective yet sweet-tempered, forming deep bonds with their young family members.

Fair

4 out of 10

Great Danoodles are generally suitable for first-time owners who can manage a large breed, as they are intelligent, eager to please, and less demanding than some purebreds. Their gentle and affectionate nature makes training relatively straightforward with positive reinforcement. However, novices must be prepared for the significant costs of giant breed care and remain committed to early socialization to ensure their large size remains manageable.

Good

6 out of 10

Great Danoodles can be good apartment dogs because they are generally calm and gentle indoors. While their large size requires more floor space than smaller breeds, they can thrive in apartments if owners are committed to providing the necessary daily exercise and mental stimulation to satisfy their moderate energy levels.

High

3 out of 10

A yard is not strictly required for a Great Danoodle, as they are relatively calm indoors and can adapt to various living environments. However, a securely fenced yard is highly recommended for these large, social dogs to stretch their limbs and play safely. Provided they receive 45 to 60 minutes of daily walks and mental stimulation, they can remain happy and healthy in homes without a private outdoor space.

Average

5 out of 10

Great Danoodles are highly social and crave human interaction, making them prone to separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods. While they can manage moderate absences with proper training and a consistent routine, they thrive best in households where they are not left alone too often and receive plenty of attention from their family. Without adequate companionship, they may become depressed or exhibit destructive behaviors.

Fair

4 out of 10

Great Danoodles generally coexist peacefully with cats, especially when raised together from puppyhood. While their Poodle heritage contributes a lower prey drive, their large size means introductions should be slow and supervised to ensure the safety of smaller pets. Providing high retreats for cats and consistent training helps maintain a harmonious multi-pet household.

Balanced

5 out of 10

Great Danoodles are not naturally aggressive; they are typically sweet-tempered, affectionate "gentle giants" that are eager to please their families. While they are friendly and patient, their large size and deep, alert bark make them effective watchdogs that will announce strangers. Consistent training and early socialization are essential to ensure they remain confident and well-behaved in various social situations.

Energetic

7 out of 10

Great Danoodles have moderate to high energy levels, often described as energetic giants who enjoy daily walks and play. While they are calm and chill indoors, they require regular physical activity and mental stimulation, such as training games or puzzle toys, to stay happy and prevent destructive behaviors.

~60 min a day

6 out of 10

Great Danoodles require approximately 45 to 60 minutes of moderate daily exercise, such as walks, park romps, and play sessions. Because of their large size and potential for joint issues or bloat, activity should be consistent but low-impact, avoiding overexertion in extreme weather. Incorporating mental stimulation and indoor snuggling helps maintain their health and well-balanced temperament.

Average

Great Danoodles can be sensitive to heat due to their large body mass and thick Poodle-inherited coats, both of which trap heat and make cooling down difficult. Owners should provide constant access to shade and fresh water, and utilize cooling mats or fans indoors. To prevent heatstroke, limit outdoor activities to the early morning or late evening and avoid walking on hot pavement that can burn their sensitive paw pads.

Moderate Risk

6 out of 10

Great Danoodles are typically not subject to breed-specific bans, but their large size often exceeds the weight limits set by many apartment complexes and rental properties. While they are known as gentle giants, potential owners should carefully review lease agreements for size restrictions and ensure they can provide adequate space for such a large dog.

"Great Danoodles are devoted protectors, but their giant size and deep chests make them highly susceptible to Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV), or bloat, a life-threatening emergency inherited from their Great Dane ancestry. As a veterinarian, I strongly recommend a prophylactic gastropexy surgery to secure the stomach and prevent torsion. They are also predisposed to joint dysplasia and heart conditions like dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). To support their health, owners should prioritize weight management to reduce stress on joints, feed multiple small meals to mitigate bloat risk, and ensure regular cardiac screenings to catch potential issues early."
